Johnny Depp is preparing for a new major role: he will star in the first English-language screen adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, Variety reported. The project will be handled by IN.2 Film, Depp’s company, which has already produced several of his films. Producers Svetlana Migunova-Dali and Grace Loh are on board — the same pair currently in a legal dispute with distributor Mikhail Lokshin, asserting that they hold the exclusive rights to adapt the novel. Stephen Deuters and Stephen Malit are also listed among the producers.

No director is attached yet, but filming is slated to begin in late 2026. For the global film industry, the announcement stands to be a notable moment: an English-language version of one of Russia’s most renowned novels has been discussed for years by literature devotees and entertainment watchers, yet only now is it taking concrete shape. The prospect feels bold for English-speaking audiences.

Viewers will be watching with interest how Depp and his team translate Bulgakov’s mystical world to the screen — and, just as importantly, who ultimately joins the cast.
